I got a fairly minor reddish itchy rash from allopurinol, and now am told I have to use Uloric which is much more expensive. Is there much chance I could use allopurinol again at a later time without the rash? Would benadryl prevent the rash? I can’t afford to take uloric, and attacks of gout are awful.

Hi, I’m doing research to see if anyone else has experiemced the same reaction that my mom has experienced taking allopurinol. My mom had a severe allergic reaction to the drug, and I don’t show that the drug even lists it as a possibility. My mom contracted the deadly virus SJS (Steven Johnson Syndrome).

I had recurrent bouts (every 4 months) of gout. A week after starting to take Allopurinol, I developed a fever, sore throat and a cough. 2 days later, I had a rash all over, aching joints and swollen feet. I am now in my 3rd week. Can someone assure me that these side effects are temporary while my body adjusts to allopurinol. please?

Bridget, STOP TAKING IT! It can do serious damage to your blood vessels in your skin and organs the longer you let it go on! Jan 9 I started allopurinol. Feb 3rd-4th I started coughing, sore throat. I Feb 5th I woke up after a night of tossing and turning with a high fever and sore throat, had rash on chest and back. Went to ER, they thought it was a virus. Went to ER again 2 days later because the rash had spread to cover my entire body and was making its way down my legs and had become insanely itchy. They gave me benadryl and prednisone. I accidentally missed a dose of another med I was on and my rash was less itchy the next day. Doc said get off that med. I did, but rash did not go away. He gave me more prednisone. When that scrip was done, the rash came back full force, red and itchy again, along with sore throat again. I started looking into the allopurinol online and was amazed that not one doctor out of two ER visits, my PCP, nor the nurse practitioner I saw at work mentioned the potentially fatal rash side effects of allopurinol! I am on day 3 of NOT taking it and the rash is almost gone. I am still itchy, it is still there, but not near as bad as it was. It is tolerable and I can tell it is going away. This is one month to the day of my rash outbreak. I just hope I have not developed vasculitis. I see my doc tomorrow. My legs are still slightly discoloured and feel odd but better than before. I suggest EVERYONE google “allopurinol rash” and read all you can and be very well informed. Good luck.
