Diazepam for Alcohol Withdrawal

Genivieve	My Dad is a big time alcoholic, and his doctor put him on diazepam to prevent DTs from withdrawal when he stops drinking. Dad is staying with me to have a safe and sober place, but on the diazepam he just sleeps all day long. Is Dad going to be a drug addict as a substitute for being an alcoholic? This seems like a crutch to me. Anyone know if this is a good plan for alcohol withdrawal? How long does someone need to stay on the diazepam?
