Lipitor Dosage

Lipitor is a member of the statin family of medications taken to lower LDL cholesterol and to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.  It has FDA indications for treatment of hypercholesterolemia, mixed lipidemia, hypertryglyceridemia Type 4, dysbetalipoptoteinemia, homyzygous familial hypercholesterolemia and for cardiovascular event prevention.

Lipitor dosage is available in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg doses.  Often these tablets are broken in half to reduce costs as the pricing is flat across the dosing range, so the total cost can be reduced significantly by taking a half pill of a double strength tablet.  The starting dose of Lipitor is usually 10-20 mg, and may be increased every 2-4 weeks up to a maximum dose of 80 mg daily.  A starting dose of 40 mg daily is recommended for patients where a reduction goal of more than 45% of their baseline LDL level is desirable.
