Ranitidine is an antihistamine that is relatively specific for the H2 histamine receptor which is associated with stomach acid production, rather than H1 receptors that are present in the nose, respiratory tree and skin. Ranitidine is used for peptic ulcer disease and other conditions associated with excess stomach acid production and ranitidine is used to stop the stomach from producing too much acid. Therefore it is useful in gastro-esophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, acid dyspepsia. In some countries including the United States ranitidine is available in pharmacies without a need for prescription. Zantac is the most well-known brand name of ranitidine.

Ranitidine dosage is typically 150 mg twice daily, or 300 mg at bedtime. OTC ranitidine is available in 75 mg doses, and sometimes as little as 75 mg is an effective ranitidine dosage. When the stomach stabilizes the ranitidine dosage may be reduced to 150mg once a day for some patients. Ranitidine is also available as an infusion for people who are unable to take the medication orally, as often is the case in the hospital. Children can use the liquid form of ranitidine for dyspepsia, although the doctor might need to adjust the dosage according to response; the recommended dosage is 2mg per kilogram three times a day, with a maximum of 9mg per kilogram daily in children. Fortunately ranitidine side effects are relatively uncommon.
