Citalopram’s trade name is Celexa. Citalopram is an antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication in the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor class. It is sold as 10, 20 and 40 mg tablets as well as a 10mg/5ml solution.
Black Box Warnings: Citalopram can increase the risk of suidicality in children, adolescents and young adults. It is not approved for use in children. Suicide is more common in persons with depression and other psychiatric disorders, and all patients need to be monitored closely for worsening of depression, sudden behavior change or suicidal ideation. Common Citalopram Side Effects: Citalopram side effects are primarily those of the entire class of antidepressant medications called serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or SSRIs. These drugs all have much more in common than they differ, and many of the side effects of citalopram are simply the common side effects of all SSRI medications. The most common and bothersome of the side effects of the SSRIs is delayed orgasm. This is especially a problem in female patients, but is also a common side effect in male patients. Orgasm with sexual intercourse can sometimes be so difficult or delayed that it simply does not happen. This side effect does not tend to wear off with time, and can be bothersome enough that some patients choose not to take this class of antidepressant drugs. Other common SSRI side effects common with citalopram include nausea, weight gain, poor sex drive or loss of libido, fatigue, difficulty sleeping or excess sleepiness, and increased sweating or yawning.…
