Zyrtec and Alcohol
Ask and answer questions in the zyrtec forum.Zyrtec and Alcohol, when taken together does not generate any serious problem except for the possibility of excess sedation. Zyrtec is considers a third generation antihistamine with the primary advantage over earlier generation antihistamines of less sedation. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and sedation is a common outcome of alcohol ingestion. Combining Zyrtec and alcohol may lead to more sedation that either used alone.
Zyrtec, an antihistamine, is prescribed to control the symptoms related to the release of histamine after exposure to something you have an allergy towards. The symptoms of histamine release may include itching, sneezing, watery eyes, runny eyes and runny nose. Zyrtec is also used to treat swelling and itching caused by chronic urticaria.
Zyrtec may impair a patient’s thinking capabilities or reaction time to various stimuli. Moreover, if, the patient also using any other medication that causes drowsiness, Zyrtec can add to the situation, which is not of course very helpful. Adding to this problem if the patient indulges in alcohol the resulting sedation may be exaggerated and can even become dangerous. This combination of Zyrtec and alcohol could result in critical accidents especially while driving.
Zyrtec is available off the shelf without a physician prescription, so users need to be aware of the potential for sedation and the attendant dangers that can result. Zyrtec side effects including sedation may be increased with Zyrtec and alcohol used in combination, and if used together a person needs to be aware of the potential of excess sedation.
